Voting may be compulsory in Australia, but it appears many of us don’t know how to.

Google revealed on Wednesday the most popular search terms for 2019, which took in both the federal and NSW elections.

Half of the ‘how to’ questions were related to politics, with ‘how to vote’ topping the list, followed by ‘how to vote Labor 2019’, ‘how to vote Liberal’, ‘how to vote in NSW State Election’ and ‘how to vote early’.

‘Fires near me’ was the number one trending search as Australia experienced one of its worst bushfire seasons on record, while top trending news searches also included ‘NSW fires,’ ‘Cyclone Oma’ and ‘Townsville flooding.’

The most popular Australian was tennis world No.1 Ash Barty, followed by former Senator Fraser Anning and Israel Folau.

Globally the biggest names were YouTube make-up blogger James Charles, 17-year-old pop star Billie Eilish and Jordyn Woods, the latest villain in the Kardashian family drama.

In fourth place was climate change activist Greta Thunberg, while Prince Andrew came 10th in the wake of a disastrous interview about his association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Marvel’s blockbuster Avengers: Endgame stole not just the box office but two places in the top 10 searches.

Beyond our borders, Australians showed concern for the Amazon and asked why it was burning, tried to make sense of attacks in Christchurch and Sri Lanka and asked ‘why Hong Kong is protesting’.

The rankings are based not on total searches but on what had the highest spike in traffic over a sustained period in 2019 as compared to 2018.
